Thirty Third Week of Ordinary Time

 WORD of the DAY

When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.    (Luke 19: 5)

How shall I live this Word?

The figure of Zacchaeus is typical! A tax collector, easily more ‘glued’ to the money (to be delivered to the powerful Romans) than to his living there, an official rather unpopular among the people.

Jesus did not miss this character who, small in stature, was intrigued about His passage. He had even found the expedient to remedy his shortness by climbing a tree.

He seems to see Him: stretched outwards, to get a good look at this unusual traveler Christ the Lord, surrounded and pushed by a crowd in need of help in many areas.

What in this scene gives off most power is the word of Jesus “come down quickly”: an explicit command that moreover requires timeliness and prompt reception: “today I must stay at your house”.

Everything happens quickly. And the scene, to us who meditate on it with our heart, begs a question: even in the house of your heart Jesus wants to be a presence of which you have more and more awareness. Behold, do not delay in invoking the Holy Spirit with short but intense pleas: Spirit of the Lord, purify the thoughts and affections of my heart and then be divine Love for me to live by always loving.

Lord Jesus, I really want to get out of my presumption to believe that I am ‘okay’. Help me to bring myself to the heart of what you want me to do moment by moment and grant that I may do everything with love.

Those who recognize they belong to the human family, how can they not open the doors? Then I, as a Christian, how can I not be welcoming? And I welcome you as you are, as a person, because even before being male, female, homosexual or a stranger, one is a person, that is, a subject of autonomy.
