75-year history of “Borgo Ragazzi Don Bosco”

Italy – 13 April 2023 (ANS – Rome) – Seventy-five years ago, in the spring of 1948, the Salesians of Rome led the caravan of boys who from Via Marsala moved along Via Prenestina until they came to populate those courtyards and sheds that still today welcome, educate and give attention to hundreds of needy and at-risk minors. From that moment, the “Borgo dei Ragazzi di Don Bosco” was born, a small town in which the children and their growing needs were the focus of the attention and care of so many Salesians and people. Those youngsters were the orphans taken in by the Salesians, who after World War II had responded diligently to the appeal of Pope Pius XII, who recommended the very sons of Don Bosco to care for the forsaken and lonely youth of the Capital. A few months later, in L’Osservatore Romano, and precisely on July 19, 1948, on the day after the official inauguration of the Borgo Ragazzi Don Bosco by Card. Pizzardo wrote: “Who would have thought, a few years ago, that the vast land surrounding Fort Prenestino would have become a haven for a multitude of children and that the sheds, set up...

Pope at Easter Urbi et Orbi: Christ is truly risen, hope is reborn for all! – Vatican News

Pope at Easter Urbi et Orbi: Christ is truly risen, hope is reborn for all! Following the Easter Sunday Mass, Pope Francis delivers his Easter message and blessing “To the City and the World”, underscoring the joyous hope that Christ’s resurrection brings and encouraging Christians to rediscover the joy of serving God, working for peace, and helping our brothers and sisters in a world marked by so much suffering. By Thaddeus Jones Pope Francis gave his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” Easter message on Sunday, appearing from the central loggia of Saint Peter’s Basilica overlooking the Square below where he had just presided over the Easter morning Mass. The Mass and “Urbi et Urbi” (from the Latin: ‘To the city and the world’) message and blessing went out live on broadcasts around the world. Over one hundred thousand people filled the Square and surrounding avenues, which were navigated by the Pope in the popemobile as he greeted them following the Mass. As usual, the flowers donated by florists from the Netherlands appeared brilliantly under the mild Spring sunshine. Close to thirty thousand flowers adorned the square and the balcony of the loggia, recalling the theme of new life, hope, and joy at...

How to obtain a plenary indulgence during Holy Week 2023

By CNA Staff CNA Staff, Apr 3, 2023 / 12:00 pm A plenary indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church through the merits of Jesus Christ, Mary, and all the saints to remove the temporal punishment due to sin. The indulgence applies to sins already forgiven. A plenary indulgence cleanses the soul as if the person had just been baptized. A plenary indulgence can be obtained during Holy Week for oneself or for a deceased person if one of the following works established by the Church is performed. Holy Thursday — April 6, 2023 1. If during the solemn reservation of the Blessed Sacrament (typically on a side altar), which follows the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, you recite or sing the eucharistic hymn “Tantum Ergo.” 2. If you adore the solemnly reserved Blessed Sacrament for a half hour. Good Friday — April 7, 2023 1. If you venerate the cross in the solemn celebration of the Lord’s Passion. 2. If you piously participate in the Stations of the Cross. Holy Saturday — April 8, 2023 1.
