“Education in love: affectivity and sexuality. How to accompany young people”

“Education in love: affectivity and sexuality. How to accompany young people” 08 June 2021 (ANS – Rome) – In the last two weeks of May and the first of June, delegates, consecrated persons and lay people from all the Provinces of the world participated in three formative sessions organized by the Youth Ministry Sector. This initiative was conceived in response to the need of the Provinces to form and share the pastoral and moral keys for the affective-sexual education of young people, thinking of educational criteria. The participation was very numerous and representative of the various realities: a total of about 580 people across three days. With great competence and skill, Professor Javier de la Torre introduced the participants to very delicate and significant issues on an educational-pastoral level, but also on a personal level. In the first meeting, the pastoral and moral keys for the affective sexual education of young people were provided. They started from a horizon in which there are insufficient models of sexuality education to arrive at principles of sexuality education that envisage a path of knowledge – as opposed to ignorance -, of openness and communication – as opposed to silence -, of attention and...

Global Day of Parents: Salesian Missions highlights educational and social development programs that support parents

01 June 2021 (ANS – New Rochelle) – Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, joins humanitarian organizations and the international community in celebrating Global Day of Parents, which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. The day, celebrated each year on June 1, honours parents throughout the world and provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents for their commitment to children. This year the U.N. is focused on the role that parents have played during the pandemic. The U.N noted, “As the anchors of the family and the foundation of our communities and societies, parents have the responsibility of sheltering their families from harm, caring for out-of-school children and, at the same time, continuing their work responsibilities. Without support from parents, children’s health, education and emotional well-being is at risk. By introducing family-friendly workplace policies and practices, companies and organizations will be in a better position to promote children’s safety and well-being and provide systematic support to employees.” In their work in more than 130 countries around the globe, Salesian missionaries provide support to the parents of the children in their programs. Father Gus Baek, director of Salesian Missions, said, “Supporting...

The Foundations of Science A Catholic Elementary School Science Curriculum The Foundations of Science series introduces children to the wonders of the natural world in light of God’s providential care over creation, and the first 4 volumes are releasing over the course of the 2021-22 academic year. Foundations of Science covers an extensive scope of scientific studies, from animals and plants, to the depths of the ocean and the marvels of our planet. Still more, it reveals the intricate order found beneath the surface of creation and chronicles many of the Church’s contributions to science throughout history. The first volume, Animals: Creatures of the Wild, offers a tour of the animal kingdom and the habitats in which mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and fish live and thrive. Children will discover how animals find and hunt for food, how and why they live in concert with other animals, why they migrate or hibernate, and more. What do animals have to do with our Catholic Faith? How is virtue similar to the protective exoskeleton of some insects? And how does a lesson on reptiles lead to a discussion of Mary’s battle with Satan from Genesis to Revelation? The accompanying video lecture series connects lessons from the textbook to truths about faith,...

Pope Francis: I establish the lay ministry of Catechist

Apostolic Letter issued “Motu Proprio” by the Supreme Pontiff Francis Antiquum ministerium, instituting the ministry of catechist, 10 May 2021 Francis Motu Proprio [ DE  – EN  – ES  – FR  – IT  – PL  – PT ] APOSTOLIC LETTER ISSUED “MOTU PROPRIO” BY THE SUPREME PONTIFF FRANCIS “ANTIQUUM MINISTERIUM” INSTITUTING THE MINISTRY OF CATECHIST   1. The ministry of Catechist in the Church is an ancient one. Theologians commonly hold that the first examples are already present in the writings of the New Testament. The service of catechesis may be traced back to those “teachers” mentioned by the Apostle in writing to the community of Corinth: “Some people God has designated in the Church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way” (1 Cor 12:28-31). Saint Luke begins his Gospel by stating: “I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so...
