Keeping alive the memory of two Salesian Martyrs in China

Oliva Gessi – Hong Kong – Dili – Bangalore, 7 September 2020 — Not only for the provinces of China, Indonesia (St Louis Versiglia) and Timor Leste (St Callisto Caravario) – but for the whole Salesian Congregation, this year is a good opportunity to treasure the memory of our first two martyrs – St Louis Versiglia and St Callisto Caravario – 90 years after their death in China and 20 years after their canonization at the Vatican. And we experience that our martyrs’ memory lifts our missionary spirit! After the EAO pilgrimage to the Birthplace of St Louis Versiglia, Oliva Gessi (Pavia-Northern Italy), last February 2020, communication channels between the Versiglia compatriots and the Salesians of our region were strengthened. The monthly parish newsletter ‘Oliva Mese’ has already featured the EAO pilgrimage on three occasions. They are looking ahead to the 100th anniversary of Bishop’s Versiglia episcopal ordination (January 2021) and new publication and video about ‘their’ martyr! Two years after the successful translation of ‘Martiri in Cina’ (ed. LDC – Torino, 1976) into English, both the Chinese version (Hong Kong, CIN) and the English version (Bangalore, INK) will be published in the near future as the contribution...

Letters of Thanks from Sr. Leslye and Don Giuseppe

AND A HUGE “THANKS” TO BOTH OF YOU, SR. LESLYE AND DON GIUSEPPE, AS YOU COMPLETE YOUR TERM OF SERVICE AS WORLD DELEGATES TO THE SALESIAN COOPERATORS! BE SURE OF OUR GRATEFUL PRAYER To Mr. Antonio Boccia, World Coordinator of the ASSCC and his Council To the Delegates of the ASSCC To all the Salesian Cooperators Dearest friends, I greet each of you with feelings of great gratitude for all that we have experienced during my years as a World Delegate within the Association. It is a service that has helped me grow as a Salesian and as a consecrated person: the fact of sharing the charism with you, the laity, has strengthened my vocation and broadened the horizons of our common charism, a charism that becomes even greater and more fascinating when it is shared with others, beyond one’s own condition of life, culture, and social reality. Receive my most heartfelt thanks addressed to everyone.  Still, I also want to personalize it so that it reaches the hearts of the persons whom I have encountered during this period of my life and in my mission with you.             Thanks to Mrs. Noemi Bertola and the World Council of...

Buona notte – Lord, send me out of my comfort zone!

Lord, sen d me out of my comfort zone! EAO Good night talk – 2019, August Dear Friends and Salesian Family members,     Receive my heartfelt greetings on the second stop over of this second semester journey around our EAO region – Cambodia. The ‘EAO Good Night Talk’ was started in April 2014 after the General Chapter 27 as a humble attempt to strengthen the sense of belonging among the Salesian family members in our large and diversified Region of 23 countries. Most of our EAO cultures appreciate very much the storytelling for the community building and deeper relationship.    This year it’s already 35th anniversary of my escaped from Czechoslovakia to become a missionary in Project Africa! One night, on August 1984, as a young Salesian I crossed the Alps between Yugoslavia and Italy. It was an adventure that marked out my whole life and vocation, was narrated hundreds of times over in various occasions. In 1982 it took two years to plan this flight from a communist country – Czechoslovakia – so I could set out as a missionary ad gentes. And finally in August 1984 it took just two days by bus from Prague to the Adriatic sea coast (Yugoslavia)...
