“Faces of the same charism. Salesians & Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in the 20th century”

31 January 2022 (ANS – Rome) – The presentation of the volume Volti di uno stesso carisma. Salesiani e Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice nel XX secolo, or Faces of the same charism. Salesians and Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in the twentieth century, edited by Fr Francesco Motto, SDB, and Sister Grazia Loparco, FMA, and published by LAS (Rome 2021) took place with extremely positive results on January 26 at the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS) in Rome. Promoted by the association of Salesian historians, Associazione Cultori di Storia Salesiana (ACSSA) in collaboration with the Faculty of Education and Social Communication of the aforementioned university, various scholars shared their presentations during the event. In his greeting, prof. Fr Antonio Dellagiulia, SDB, Dean of the Faculty of Education Sciences (ESF) of the UPS, underlined the spiritual value of the individual profiles and their inclusion in the Salesian tradition; in the individual characters presented, he also identified that path of clear personal identity, great intimacy, and social generativity, of which a classic author of developmental psychology, Erik Erikson, speaks. Professor Fr Motto, President of ACSSA, then illustrated the complex phases of international preparatory work for the volume, the objectives that were intended and achieved, and the innovative...

Conference on Mother Mazzarello and Her Maternal Heart – from the Auxilium

Rome (Italy). On 2 December 2021, with the presentation by Prof. Eliane Petri, FMA, on the theme “Mother Mazzarello: ‘a big and generous heart’. Her educational motherhood challenges us”, the 2nd appointment of ‘Salesian Thursdays at Auxilium’ was held, the initiative of the Studies Center on FMA of the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences ‘Auxilium’ in Rome with in-depth studies on the pedagogy, spirituality, and history of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. The ‘secret’ of the fully realized life of Mary Domenica, explains Prof. Petri, is contained in her ‘motherly heart’. Mary Domenica lived her spiritual motherhood in the light of the motherhood of Mary of Nazareth, source of generativity, “‘At the Wedding of Cana there was the Mother of Jesus’ (Jn 2: 1), a solicitous, attentive, foreseeing, prayerful presence. Also in Mornese there was the mother, Mary Mazzarello. Her mission was to form the first FMA and to create a new way of being a vocational, synodal, missionary community ‘with’ and ‘for’ the young”. The adjective ‘educational’ qualifies her identity as a woman educator and is completed with the action of the Holy Spirit, keeping in mind the person in all her dimensions: human, emotional, intellectual, spiritual in their entirety. “It is a motherhood...

Feast of the Immaculate Conception: the “beautiful day” – Greetings of la Madre, Sr. Chiara Cazzuola, FMA

Greetings from the Mother General of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Mother Chiara Cazzuola, for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Rome (Italy). The Message of Greetings from the Mother General of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Mother Chiara Cazzuola, on the occasion of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary: This is the “beautiful day”! This is how Mother Mazzarello defines the days of the novena and the feast of MARY IMMACULATE! (L 16 to the Sisters of Borgo San Martino). Truly everything becomes beautiful with her. The Christian people live this feast as the triumph of the beauty of grace and celebrate Mary with the most beautiful and intense expressions of nature, of creation. In Valdocco, in Mornese, in our houses, for 150 years we have been singing to Mary with particular affection. The Marian Circle that is celebrated in each community unites us in invoking her in languages from all over the world. One wonders on what other day, if not December 8, could the call to a ‘poor priest’ and a boy to embody the Salesian charism be fulfilled, so that young people, avid for the future, for beauty, for...
