Closure of the 24th General Chapter of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians

25 October 2021 Rome, Italy – October 2021 – The 24th General Chapter of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians at the FMA Generalate in Rome ended yesterday, 24 October. In the morning, Mother General, Sr. Chiara Cazzuola, presented her concluding speech to the Chapter members, thanking them “for their passionate and serene participation”. At 11am, the Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, presided over the Eucharist. Before the conclusion of GC 24, the Chapter members also received a special visit on 22 October from Pope Francis who met the participants and exhorted them to be “generative communities” and “women of hope”. Closing of FMA GC 24, the Rector Major: “You are called to be life for many”

25 October 2021 (ANS – Rome) – Yesterday, Sunday 24 October 2021, the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) concluded its 24th General Chapter at its Generalate, which began on 11 September 2021. In the 44 days of listening, prayer, dialogue and discernment, the 172 FMA Chapter members elected the new Mother General, Mother Chiara Cazzuola. They also elected the other members of the General Council, and they reflected together on how to be “Communities that generate life in the heart of contemporary life.” The General Chapter was lived an attitude of listening to the call of God who prepares them to live the future with young people of today’s history. All of the work of GC 24 now finds its synthesis in the Chapter Document “With Mary, being a ‘presence’ that generates life”. She succeeds the former Superior Sr Teresia FURUKI (2016-2021) as the leader of the 900+ religious congregation established in 1937 in Miyazaki, Japan.        The new Superior General was born in South Korea, made her first religious profession in 1983, final vows in 1989 in Gwangju. From multiple sources: Rome, FMA General House, 25 October 2021 — On the morning of 22 October, after leaving Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis went by car to the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians General House, where he met participants at the 24th General Chapter of the Institute, which is being held in Rome from 11 September to 24 October 2021 on the theme “Generative Communities of Life in the Heart of Contemporaneity”.        During this memorable and quite unexpected encounter (unlike the SDBs during the GC28 at Valdocco in March 2020), the 180 FMA Sisters at the General Chapter were encouraged by Pope Francis on their path of following Jesus Christ with more courage and determination. Sr. Maria Luisa Nicastro appointed Secretary-General of the FMA Institute

19 October 2021 (ANS – Rome) – On Monday 18 October 2021 the Mother General of the FMA Institute, Sr. Chiara Cazzuola, appointed, with the consent of the General Council, Sr. Maria Luisa Nicastro, of the Roman Province “San Giovanni Bosco” (IRO), as the Secretary-General of the FMA Institute and communicated it to the participants in the XXIV General Chapter. Sister Nicastro, born in Rome, was the Principal of the “Mary Help of Christians” Secondary School in Rome and is a Visiting Lecturer at the Pontifical Faculty of Educational Sciences “Auxilium” in Rome. Until now she held the position of Secretary of the IRO Province. The Secretary General is responsible for the general archives, the history of the Institute, the registers and general statistics. (C. 133) Her duties include: the drafting of the Acts and Deliberations of the General Council and the official documents of the Institute; the compilation of the registers and general statistics; fostering and the deepening of the charism and history of the Institute.
