FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Fourth Saturday of LENT March 28, 2020 WORD of the DAY Some in the crowd who heard these words said, “This is truly the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But others said, “The Messiah will not come from Galilee, will he? Does not scripture say that the Messiah will be of David’s family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. (John 7: 40-43) How shall I live this Word? Because of how He speaks, Jesus is recognized by some a prophet who speaks words of truth, words that give life. Others instead, recognize Him not only by how He speaks, but by how He fulfills and accomplishes what He says. They recognize Him as the Christ, the One who not only says the Word, but who fulfills it, restoring the truth to humanity, and realizing the promised Kingdom. Faced with the evidence of what Jesus said and did, there were some who raised the objection relative where the Christ would come from. It was not possible to consider Him as such because they were limited in their knowledge that...

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Sixth Saturday of Ordinary Time February 22, 2020 WORD of the DAY When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16: 13-19) How shall I live this Word? God lowered himself, descended from the height of his royalty and became one of us. This conjunction...

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Sixth Thursday of Ordinary Time February 20, 2020 WORD of the DAY Now Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Messiah.” Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. (Mark 8: 27-30) How shall I live this Word? Following Jesus is a continuous discovery. He speaks to us openly, but this speaking is both dark and mysterious. Almost elusive. It speaks of a secret, of something that must be revealed little by little, of a face that must be transformed by exhibiting the marked features of suffering, to express humanity’s mimicry of love even better. Where intelligence, clairvoyance, and typically human common sense could not help us in any way, we let the Master take us by the hand, guide us on the unexplored paths, where the mystery of all pain and suffering is involved. We...

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD CHRISTMAS DAY December 25, 2019 WORD of the DAY Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2: 9-14) How shall I live this Word? The solemnity of Christmas highlights the good, tender, and merciful face of God. The Son of God becomes human and is our companion on our life journey. Remembering God’s great...

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT CHRISTMAS NOVENA December 22, 2019 WORD of the DAY Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord* appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife...

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Saturday, January 30, 2016 Third Week in Ordinary Time From the Word of the Day A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!”* The wind ceased and there was a great calm. (Mark 4: 37-38) How should we live this Word The Lake of Tiberius is so large at Jesus’ times that it was called a sea. Its location is such that when a storm erupts, the tempest is so strong it produces huge waves. Thus, we can understand the anxiety of the disciples who tell Jesus with some shadow of reproof, “Do you not care that we are perishing?” Their Teacher, in fact, seemed to be unconscious of the gravity of the situation. He was fast asleep after a day of missionary fatigue. But as soon as He awakens to what is happening, He shouts at the wind and orders the sea to calm...
