from Catholic Exchange AL SMITH Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was a man for all seasons. Over his lifetime, he spent himself for souls, transforming lives with the clear teaching of the truths of Christ and His Church through his books, radio addresses, lectures, television series, and his many newspaper columns. As a much sought-after lecturer, his topics ranged from the social concerns of the day to matters of faith and morals. With an easy and personable manner, Sheen could strike up a conversation on just about any subject, making numerous friends as well as converts. During his presentations, Archbishop Sheen would offer his trademark words of benediction, “God love you”. Sheen explained that his phrase “God love you” means God is love, God loves you, and you ought to love God in return. Along with his familiar parting phrase of “God love you”, Archbishop Sheen was known for beginning his lectures with the greeting “Friends”. This salutation had a twofold meaning: he was referring to the scripture passage “I no longer call you servants… instead, I have called you friends.” (John 15:15). And, he wanted to make friends with men and women of all faiths, in the hope of...

Pope Francis releases his message for the 30th World Day of the Sick, and urges Catholics and Church-run institutions to continue efforts to heal and soothe the wounds of those suffering illness. By Devin Watkins “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Lk 6:36): Standing beside those who suffer on a path of charity.” Those words formed the theme of Pope Francis’ message for the World Day of the Sick—scheduled for 11 February—which was released on Tuesday. The Pope noted that this year’s occurrence marks 30 years since Pope St. John Paul II instituted the World Day to encourage all members of the Church to “be increasingly attentive to the sick and to those who care for them.” He also expressed his gratitude for the great advances in healthcare and pastoral care of the sick in the intervening three decades, while recalling that many people still live in areas that are poorly served by healthcare systems and pastoral outreach. The World’s Thy Ship “The world’s thy ship, and not thy home.” I remember reading that phrase for the first time in St. Therese’s Story of a Soul. In her early twenties, at the time of writing this, she would be considered wise beyond her years. Her wisdom came at no small cost, though – […] Source: Saints Louis & Zélie Martin: Suffering in Love &...

Pope to the elderly: God sends his angels to console your loneliness Pope Francis reassures the elderly that God is always with them in his message for the first-ever World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. He also reminds them of their vocation to preserve our roots and to pass on the faith to the younger ones. By Fr. Benedict Mayaki, SJ Pope Francis on Tuesday released a message for the First World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly ahead of the date of the celebration which is scheduled for 25 July. The theme chosen by the Pope for the inaugural commemoration is “I am with you always” (Mt 28: 30). The Holy Father addressed the theme from the Gospel of Matthew to all Grandparents and the elderly, reminding them that this is the promise the Lord made to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. “The whole Church is close to you – to us – and cares about you, loves you and does not want to leave you alone!” the Pope said, identifying with the elderly, as one of them. Comfort amid the pandemic The Pope’s message comes amid the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic that...

“Education in love: affectivity and sexuality. How to accompany young people” 08 June 2021 (ANS – Rome) – In the last two weeks of May and the first of June, delegates, consecrated persons and lay people from all the Provinces of the world participated in three formative sessions organized by the Youth Ministry Sector. This initiative was conceived in response to the need of the Provinces to form and share the pastoral and moral keys for the affective-sexual education of young people, thinking of educational criteria. The participation was very numerous and representative of the various realities: a total of about 580 people across three days. With great competence and skill, Professor Javier de la Torre introduced the participants to very delicate and significant issues on an educational-pastoral level, but also on a personal level. In the first meeting, the pastoral and moral keys for the affective sexual education of young people were provided. They started from a horizon in which there are insufficient models of sexuality education to arrive at principles of sexuality education that envisage a path of knowledge – as opposed to ignorance -, of openness and communication – as opposed to silence -, of attention and...
