Sr. Rita Bailey, FMA – RIP

Sr. Rita Bailey peacefully left us for paradise on the afternoon of December 31st, 2022. She passed away at the Provincial House in San Antonio, TX surrounded by her Sisters. She was the fifth of seven children, and a native of San Francisco, CA. Sr. Rita served and lived the charism dynamically ministering to young people as teacher, youth minister, catechist, counselor, and Director of Guidance.  She worked in Atlantic City, Paterson, NJ, New York City, Port Chester, NY, San Francisco, Lomita, Corralitos, CA, Marrero, Louisiana, and San Antonio, TX. Sr. Rita is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and her religious community, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Salesian Sisters) and many, loving friends. She has joined her parents, John Frank Bailey and Hannah Marie Kelleher along with her two brothers and four sisters in everlasting happiness. The 95-year-old Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away on Saturday at 9:34 AM in his residence at the Vatican’s Mater Ecclesiae Monastery. Fr. Augustine Baek, SDB – RIP

Fr. Augustine Baek, SDB (1958-2022) went to the Salesian Garden! Rest in Peace: Fr. Augustine Woon Taek Baek, SDB, died at 2:10 p.m. on December 30 at home, the Salesian Provincial Center, in New Rochelle. He was 64 years old and had been a professed Salesian of Don Bosco for 35 years and a priest for 27 years.Widely known as Fr. Gus, he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020. The cancer spread in spite of treatment, including several hospitalizations and several forms of chemotherapy. After another Anointing of the Sick by Fr. Provincial on December 26, surrounded by the confreres of the community, Fr. Gus began hospice care.Fr. Gus was very much beloved in the Korean community of the New York metro area, whom he had faithfully served for most of his priestly life, and they attended him tenderly in his last months—as did his Salesian confreres.Woon Taek Baek was born in Kwangju, South Korea, on September 19, 1958. Sr. Lucy Yuen, FMA, RIP

Sr. Lucy Kam-ying Yuen, FMA, the second of two children in the family, native of Canton, Kwangtung, China, died unexpectedly at the age of 75 on October 19, 2022, at Doctors’ Hospital in Laredo, TX. Sr. Lucy served the Lord and His little children with contagious joy and unwavering enthusiasm as a teacher and catechist in several schools in New Jersey, California, and Texas. Her last assignment cut short by heart failure after she had just finished teaching a class of kindergartners in Laredo, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her sister Christina Lo, nieces and nephews and her religious community, the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians – Salesian Sisters. Rest in Peace Mr. Ángel Fernández Fernández – Heartfelt Condolences to the Rector Major

15 September 2021 (ANS – Rome) – At 7 am today, 15 September, Ángel Fernández Fernández, the father of our Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, breathed his last after a long illness. Born in Luanco, Asturias, Spain, on 12 June 1932, he passed away after 89 years of life and 61 years of marriage, by the side of his mother Isabel Artime. The Rector Major, had a deep attachment to his father and recalls with affection some of his significant traits: “Every day, when the weather was good, he would go to see ‘his sea’. He started working as a fisherman at the age of 13 and continued until he was 78, accompanying and helping another young fisherman”. “He was a serene and calm man, with qualities that he might have acquired from his many hours spent alone at sea. He was simple, good-hearted, and very much committed to the family, and did not look for anything much to be happy.
