Vatican – Holy See grants Nulla Osta for Cause of Vera Grita, Lay, Salesian Cooperator

On 26 May 2021, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints communicated to the Bishop of Savona-Noli, Msgr. Calogero Marino, the Nulla Osta from the Holy See for the opening of the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God Vera Grita (1923-1969), Laywoman, Salesian Cooperator. The Nulla Osta is the authorization by the Holy See for the opening of the diocesan inquiry as it has been shown that there is nothing in the Vatican Dicasteries against the Servant of God that hinders her Cause. Vera Grita, born in Rome on January 28, 1923, was an elementary school teacher. After being trampled on by a crowd fleeing a bombing in Savona on 4 July 1944, her injuries marked her irreparably. She was 21. Despite her condition, she accepted to teach in peripheral schools in the Ligurian hinterland: Rialto, Erli, Alpicella, Deserto di Varazze. In Savona, in the Salesian parish of Mary Help of Christians, she participated in parish life. From 1963 the Salesian Fr Giovanni Bocchi was her confessor; when she became a Salesian Cooperator (1967), she entrusted herself to the guidance of Fr Gabriello Zucconi. On September 19, 1967, the mystical experience began inviting her to live the...

Groundbreaking of Mary Help of Christians Center in Los Angeles

On May 8, 2021, at 10 AM, it was a sunny morning at St. Bridget Chinese Catholic Church. Around 100 people gathered together to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for Mary Help of Christians Center. Among the authorities there were a strong supporter and long-time friend of the Salesian presence in Los Angeles, Bishop Edward Clark; the Provincial of Salesians of Don Bosco, USA West Province, Fr Mel Trinidad, and other Salesians and cooperators; the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange; California State Senator Maria Durazo; the City Mayor representative; the high-ranking officers from the construction company; priests from other churches; Fr John Lam, Fr Peter Pong, Sr Maria Lai and many honorable parishioners, came together for the celebration. With the blessing, they held the shovels and performed digging to symbolize the beginning of the construction. Before the groundbreaking, a Mass was held and Fathers prayed to Our Lady of China, to say thanks and pray for the construction process to be safe and smooth. Five years ago, in light of limited spaces for current facilities, and forecasted future requirements, the idea of adding multi-function building was born; led by Fr John Lam, Parish Pastoral Council and Chinese Catholic Association...

A New Spring for Salesian Cooperators

By Antonio Boccia World Coordinator Association of Salesian Cooperators        Rome, 24 May 2021 — The changes that contemporary society has undergone in the latter are clearly visible. These difficulties must also represent opportunities for growth for everyone from a personal point of view and for the whole Association, to the extent that we will be able to revive the network of relationships that have been “dormant” in this period.        We will have to share experiences, raise awareness that the Association, further than the local Centre, has a provincial, regional, world tinge to give tranquillity, trust and increase the sense of belonging.        It is time to think about a new profile of the Salesian Cooperator        We cannot fail to take into account that these times are strongly influencing our personal, professional, family and associative lives. I imagine a Salesian Coopeartor who is more attentive to the common good, present and committed in the social sphere, with particular attention to the poor, families and young people and that he or she re-appropriates the specific nature of the Salesian as an educator. The cooperator becomes a bearer of enthusiasm and vitality in...

“You are Salesians in the world”: World Delegates Address Salesian Cooperators Worldwide

By Br. Dominic Nguyen Duc Nam, SDB Sr. Lucrecia Uribe, FMA        Rome, 22 May 2021 — Dear brothers and sisters Salesian Cooperators,        As a Family we are happy to be able to celebrate together the Anniversary of our Association of Salesian Cooperators which is so dear to Don Bosco.        On this occasion we, the two World Delegates, in two voices but with the same sentiments, would like to send a common greeting to each Regional Councillor, and through each of them, we want to reach out to each of the 30,000 members of the Association.        Even though we have only been serving this mission for a short time, both of us could see the profound identity and acknowledge the great apostolic commitment that the Association is engaging. In fact, it is through you that the Salesian charism is more evident, more contagious, more dynamic and actual.        We have identified in you some traits that are present in all the Regions: You are people rich in humanity, an element typical of St. Francis de Sales’ humanism, which helps you to have a positive outlook of yourselves,...
