Pope offers assistance to Catholic charity in southern Italy – Vatican News

Pope offers assistance to Catholic charity in southern Italy Cardinal Konrad Krajiewski, papal almoner, offers the support of Pope Francis to a local Catholic charity in San Severo in the province of Foggia, southern Italy opening its doors to families in difficulty due to the pandemic. By Giancarlo La Vella “Solidarity spent well” is the slogan of the “Don Felice Canelli” Emporio della Solidarietà Catholic charity promoted by the diocesan Caritas of San Severo, a larger town in the Foggia area, which opened Saturday. All families in difficulty due to the pandemic are able to receive needed assistance. Present at the inauguration was Bishop Giovanni Checchinato of San Severo, Msgr. Francesco Soddu, director of Caritas Italiana, Fr. Andrea Pupilla, director of Caritas of San Severo; the mayor, Francesco Miglio, and Simona Venditti, municipal councillor for Social Policies. Cardinal Konrad Krajiewski, papal almoner, surprised the group with his personal visit to share the Pope’s good wishes and support for the initiative to the joy of all those present. The Church of San Severo is also celebrating one of its own priests, an apostle and friend of the poor, don Felice Canelli, who was recently declared venerable by the Holy See....

80th anniversary of death of 4 Salesians in Auschwitz extermination camp

24 June 2021 (ANS – Rome) – 27 June 2021 marks the 80th anniversary of the martyrdom of four of the twelve Salesians, belonging to the St Hyacinth Province of Krakow, arrested on the night of 23 May 1941 by Gestapo officials. They are Fr Jan Świerc, 64, parish priest; Fr Ignacy Dobiasz, 61, parish vicar; Fr Franciszek Harazim, 56, professor of Theology; Fr Kazimierz Wojciechowski, 37, catechist. After a summary interrogation, although completely uninvolved with any form of political propaganda, they were accused of participating in clandestine organizations and, even more serious, of promoting the national culture – to the detriment of Nazi Germany – among young people, exploiting the influence deriving from their priesthood. That was enough to deserve the torture and the Auschwitz concentration camp. Deprived even of their name, they were forced to wear the bloody rags of those who, before them, had not survived the terrible penal company to which the accused of serious crimes were destined. Almost suffocated by the nauseating fumes of the burnt corpses that rose from the crematorium chimney, beaten and exhausted by the inhuman work, in a short time they fell by the hands of the SS men. Fr Jan...

Vatican – Holy See grants Nulla Osta for Cause of Vera Grita, Lay, Salesian Cooperator

On 26 May 2021, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints communicated to the Bishop of Savona-Noli, Msgr. Calogero Marino, the Nulla Osta from the Holy See for the opening of the Cause of Beatification and Canonization of the Servant of God Vera Grita (1923-1969), Laywoman, Salesian Cooperator. The Nulla Osta is the authorization by the Holy See for the opening of the diocesan inquiry as it has been shown that there is nothing in the Vatican Dicasteries against the Servant of God that hinders her Cause. Vera Grita, born in Rome on January 28, 1923, was an elementary school teacher. After being trampled on by a crowd fleeing a bombing in Savona on 4 July 1944, her injuries marked her irreparably. She was 21. Despite her condition, she accepted to teach in peripheral schools in the Ligurian hinterland: Rialto, Erli, Alpicella, Deserto di Varazze. In Savona, in the Salesian parish of Mary Help of Christians, she participated in parish life. From 1963 the Salesian Fr Giovanni Bocchi was her confessor; when she became a Salesian Cooperator (1967), she entrusted herself to the guidance of Fr Gabriello Zucconi. On September 19, 1967, the mystical experience began inviting her to live the...
