Simon Srugi at the University of Bethlehem

11 November 2021 (ANS – Bethlehem) – For decades the Salesian brother Sim’ān (Simon) Srugi was in charge of the medical-nursing clinic attached to the Salesian house in Betgamāl. From 1930 to 1942 he accurately recorded names of patients, types of diseases, treatment administered and their villages of origin. Eight registers of his work have been preserved, the last of which is now exhibited at the “Don Bosco House Museum” in Turin-Valdocco, in the section dedicated to the figures of holiness of the Salesian Family. They document the health service that was provided every day to dozens of sick people (40-45 on average, for a total of over 30,000), originating from more than 70 villages, some even 60 km away from the Salesian Center. For some time, these registers and the accompanying notebooks (handbooks, notebooks, prescriptions …) have attracted the attention of researchers. On November 4th, the University of Bethlehem launched a project of an interdisciplinary study of this unexplored archival heritage, from a sociological, medical-nursing, cultural point of view. Among the participants, some descendants of those patients, some are now inhabitants of the refugee camps in the Bethlehem area, among whom the memory of Sim’ān Srugi, “the holy doctor...

Closing of FMA GC 24, the Rector Major: “You are called to be life for many”

25 October 2021 (ANS – Rome) – Yesterday, Sunday 24 October 2021, the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) concluded its 24th General Chapter at its Generalate, which began on 11 September 2021. In the 44 days of listening, prayer, dialogue and discernment, the 172 FMA Chapter members elected the new Mother General, Mother Chiara Cazzuola. They also elected the other members of the General Council, and they reflected together on how to be “Communities that generate life in the heart of contemporary life.” The General Chapter was lived an attitude of listening to the call of God who prepares them to live the future with young people of today’s history. All of the work of GC 24 now finds its synthesis in the Chapter Document “With Mary, being a ‘presence’ that generates life”. In the morning, Mother General gave her concluding speech, in which she said among other things: “I feel the need to express my gratitude to the Lord for the abundance of grace to which we have been the recipients in this Chapter time. (…) As a fruitful community enlightened by the presence of Mary, we have focused on three significant choices: to be...

Death Anniversary of Venerable Maria Cristina Cella Mocellin: FMA Past Pupil

Friday 22 October is the 26th death anniversary of venerable Maria Cristina Cella Mocellin, wife and mother of a family, Past pupil of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. On this occasion, the “Holy Family” parish community of Cinisello Balsamo (Milano), her hometown, and the parish community of San Nazario, Valbrenta (VI), where she settled down after her wedding, will celebrate Mass in their respective centers to pray in remembrance of the Venerable. The whole Salesian Family has reason to celebrate her memory with gratitude. Maria Cristina, in fact, offers a model of Christian life of undoubted relevance: as a young woman she knew how to fully live the time given to her (she died on 22 October 1995, at just 26 years of age). As a mother she prioritized her baby she carried in her womb even at the cost of her own life; as a Past Pupil of the school of the FMA “Maria Ausiliatrice” of Cusano Milanino, she lived a truly spiritual life, made up of intense prayer, dedication to her duties and offering her sufferings in joyful testimony. More information is available on the website of the “Amici di Maria Cristina – ONLUS” Association...
