Fulton J. Sheen’s Lessons on Love & the Greatest Commandment

from Catholic Exchange AL SMITH Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was a man for all seasons. Over his lifetime, he spent himself for souls, transforming lives with the clear teaching of the truths of Christ and His Church through his books, radio addresses, lectures, television series, and his many newspaper columns.   As a much sought-after lecturer, his topics ranged from the social concerns of the day to matters of faith and morals. With an easy and personable manner, Sheen could strike up a conversation on just about any subject, making numerous friends as well as converts.  During his presentations, Archbishop Sheen would offer his trademark words of benediction, “God love you”. Sheen explained that his phrase “God love you” means God is love, God loves you, and you ought to love God in return.  Along with his familiar parting phrase of “God love you”, Archbishop Sheen was known for beginning his lectures with the greeting “Friends”. This salutation had a twofold meaning: he was referring to the scripture passage “I no longer call you servants… instead, I have called you friends.” (John 15:15). And, he wanted to make friends with men and women of all faiths, in the hope of...

Goodness, Beauty, & Truth: The Obligation of the Catholic Artist

I learned that most adults don’t consider themselves artists, however. And I came to adopt the societal mindset that artists were quirky, starving, and unconventional. About a year ago, I attended a performing arts demonstration about creativity, and I remembered that God is Creator, and that we, as His Image, are co-creators. In a way, […] Source: Goodness, Beauty, & Truth: The Obligation of the Catholic...

The World According to God | Sophia Institute Press

The World According to God The Whole Truth About Life and Living by F.X. Cronin author F. X. Cronin became a Catholic, many of his friends challenged him, claiming not only that the Catholic Faith is untrue but also that truth itself does not exist. In this warm response to such enduring claims, Cronin takes skeptics and believers alike on a delightful tour of reality, starting with proofs for the existence of truth itself. Thereafter, Cronin considers — and refutes — step by step, most of our culture’s common relativistic beliefs, demonstrating not only the existence of God but also the truth of Christianity, and in particular of the Catholic Faith. Doubters will be won over by Cronin’s gracious exhortations to lay aside for a moment their often reflexive assumptions in order to ponder with him the evidence he brings forth. Believers will be surprised by his piercing insights into realities that, if truth be told, most of us have insufficiently pondered ourselves. All will be delighted by his lyrical appeals to mind and heart, both of which must be engaged by anyone who would grasp in its entirety our remarkable world and its abundant evidence for the reality and...
