 WORD of the DAY

Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.  The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.   The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.  And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”  And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:  “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests”.   (Luke  2: 8-14)

How shall I live this Word?

The glory of the Lord envelops the shepherds in light and proclaims the birth of the Savior.  “This will be the sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger”.  The Messiah comes in a way very different from how the centuries had expected Him.  He comes, a God in the weakness of human likeness.  God upsets our expectations and opens horizons to know Him, horizons hidden in the daily routine of our life.  He is not present in unreachable things, but in poverty, simplicity, the normalcy of everyday good things.  This is Christmas!  This is the gift of the Incarnation of Jesus, to be able to say at every instant of our life, of our history, made of poverty, limitations, fragility: Jesus has chosen to remain with us.  He is God with us, Emmanuel!

Glory to God in the highest and on the earth peace to those on whom His favor rests!

The Voice of Pope Francis, General Audience, December 18, 2013

The birth of Jesus reveals itself not as one who is on high and dominates the Universe, but as the One who lowers Himself.  This means that to be like Him we must not put ourselves above others, but rather lower ourselves, serve others, become little with the little ones and poor with the poor.
