PENTECOST SUNDAY
WORD of the DAY
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. (Acts 2: 1-11)
How shall I live this Word?
On this Solemnity, we must not think only of what happened years ago. Now this event that comes from above is still evident and memorable. We can say that the Holy Spirit always descends upon us, if we put the conditions in place for this great event to take place in our lives, as it happened on the day of Pentecost. The Apostles were all gathered together in the same place in prayer, so there is a reality of communion between them. The first Christian community, as the Acts of the Apostles narrate, was united and persevering in prayer (cf. Acts 1:14). In fact, no one can say “Jesus is Lord!”, except under the action of the Holy Spirit.
Lord, help me to bring personal, community and liturgical prayer into harmony so that the Spirit may lead me to You and I can live in harmony with my brothers and sisters.
The voice of Pope Francis, Homily on Pentecost 5 June 2022
“Besides reminding us where to start, the Spirit teaches us which paths to take. It reminds us of the starting point, but now it teaches us which path to take. We learn this from the second reading, where Saint Paul explains that those who “are led by the Spirit of God” (Rom 8:14) “walk not according to the flesh but according to the spirit” (v. 4). In other words, the Spirit, faced with the crossroads of existence, suggests the best path to take. Therefore, it is important to know how to discern His voice from that of the evil spirit. Both speak to us. We must learn to discern in order to understand where the voice of the Spirit is, to recognize it and follow the path, follow the things that the Holy Spirit tells us.”
