WORD of the DAY
He said to them again, “I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come.” So the Jews said, “He is not going to kill himself, is he, because he said, ‘Where I am going you cannot come’?” He said to them, “You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” … The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him.” Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him. (John 8: 21-30)
How shall I live this Word?
Described with the unmistakable stylistic trait of the so-called ‘Johannine irony’, the Pharisees – each of us can be a “Pharisee”! – flounder in ignorant darkness, blind to the identity of Jesus. It would have been they, precisely they who would disdainfully pity the Master’s untimely suicide, to kill him. Ignoring that they themselves would have died in sin. With their ‘learned ignorance’ they would have allowed the worst omens on the fate of the Nazarene: they would have closed their eyes and condemned an innocent person, rather than opening themselves to the true knowledge that is faith. Any dialogue can become an absurd misunderstanding between deaf people when trust is lacking. All that remains is to make life speak: before the sign of the supreme offer of Jesus even the pharisaic unbelief can be cracked. It will be the “sign of Jonah” to convince everyone!
I humbly recognize my hardness of heart: I too, with invincible incredulity, left the Lord to His destiny. I need to evangelize my life every day, remembering that it was saved by the greatest act of love, that in my remoteness from Him, the Lord deigned to visit me and gave all of Himself for me. Today I want to re-read everything that has happened to me in the positive key of faith.
THE VOICE OF G. Dossetti, Witness
We don’t have to waste so much time on premises of abstract things; for example, the demonstration of the existence of God. The demonstration of the existence of God we must immediately derive from the existence of the Son who came among us and from faith in the incarnation. It is from this faith that we must go back to the Father. This is the new way.
