WORD of the DAY

Yet you say, ‘If a person says to father or mother, “Any support you might have had from me is korban” (meaning, dedicated to God)’, you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things. (Mark 7: 11-13)

How shall I live this Word?

Jesus takes up a courageous position against the Scribes, Pharisees, and Doctors of the Law, who are very sly in disdaining God’s Commandments in order to observe their Traditions. In this case, it deals with the Father and Mother for whom the Law received from God inculcates the obligation to honor them and help them in their need. But the prevailing formalism into which the Israelites had fallen justified every neglect in regard to elderly parents as long as the money due to the Temple was offered. This is wrong. Human traditions adapted to egoism can never substitute the primary demand of God’s Law. In fact, He is the Creator Father of the human beings He created, and after the fall, He redeemed them at the infinite price of the death on the cross of Jesus, His only Son.
Lord Jesus, grant that I may adhere every day to fidelity to Your Word so that You may truly convert me to a life that is more authentically human and Christian.
