WORD of the DAY
Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free. (John 8: 31-42)
How shall I live this Word?
Christian discipleship is a progressive awareness of who we really are: as if someone were dusting off an old identity document, seeing each other again with the features of the past and discovering with surprise that the card still has validity. Not a religious tradition, but an existential memory that leads us back to our origin from God the Father, which has been affected and faded by sin. The Son, who is the Word of the Father, leads us back to our home through obedience to that Word which is He Himself. The slave is bound to his master by a bond of subjection, the Son participates in a deep communion with His Father, and lives by listening to Him. We therefore feel part of a family when we breathe an air of freedom and when we are given back the dignity that we feel is naturally our own. Otherwise we should be content to be slaves, subordinates, wage earners, employees who enjoy some space in common with their masters.
How many times the judgment of people hurts us and encloses us in an identity that does not belong to us! Let us not be persuaded by the voices that overlap and barely scratch the surface. We wait for our heart to recognize the voice of the Father, and of this alone will it be pleased, on this rest, build, and expand in a contemplation of gazes and compliant response.
THE VOICE OF G. Dossetti, Witness
If God is, He cannot fail to be the object of all my attention and all my consideration and I must recognize His great importance in my life.
