Flee evil

25 OCTOBER 2021

30TH Monday of Ordinary Time

WORD of the DAY

Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath. And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit; she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect. When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said, “Woman, you are set free of your infirmity.”

He laid his hands on her, and she at once stood up straight and glorified God… The Lord said to him in reply, “Hypocrites! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his ass from the manger and lead it out for watering? This daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now, ought she not to have been set free on the Sabbath day from this bondage?”

When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated; and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him. (Luke 13: 10-13/15-16)

How shall I live this Word?

This woman in the synagogue where the Law of God was proclaimed, the liberating law, presents herself as ‘bound’, ‘curved’, because she ‘had been crippled by a spirit’.  Satan binds people so that they will remain closed in on themselves, crouched over, and prevented from looking on high.  In this condition, one can only look down on the earth and on earthly things on which they concentrate, and by which they remain imprisoned.  But the bent over human being is only earthly, not human, an ‘animal’ being!  The erect position restores us to the end for which we are created; to look into the eyes of others, to look beyond, to look on High.

Lord, grant that we may recognize what enslaves us, what crushes to the ground our dignity as persons created to look on High.  Help us to deny consent to evil.  Through Your Grace, grant that we many know how to define it, to struggle against it, to flee it.

The Voice of  St. Peter, Acts of the Apostles (10: 37-38)

You know the word [that] he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
