WORD of the DAY
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel.” John testified further, saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit.’ Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” (John 1: 29-34)
How shall I live this Word?
John emphasizes the superiority of Jesus, “A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because He existed before me.” He adds “I did not know Him.” He did not know Him but He was waiting for Him and He recognized Him because he was waiting for Him. When he ‘sees’ Him, he understands the meaning of what he has done and is doing. His baptism serves to manifest Him. The Baptism with water is the place of truth for every person. This gesture reveals the “Word become flesh” and the Spirit who descends and remains over Him, reveals Him as the Son of God, the friend and brother of all women and men.
Lord, may our waiting be full of hope and of conversion to Your reality! You manifest Yourself close to our life! AMEN!
The voice of Pope Francis, Angelus, 15 December 2019
Contemplate that John waited for the Messiah his whole life. His lifestyle, his body are shaped by this expectancy. Also because of this Jesus praises him with these words, “among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist” (Mt. 11: 11). And yet, he too had to be converted to Jesus. Like John , we too are called to recognize the humble and merciful face that God chose to assume in Jesus Christ,.
