GOOD FRIDAY April 19, 2019

WORD of the DAY

After this, aware that everything was now finished, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I thirst.” There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth. When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
(John 19: 28-30)

How shall I live this Word?

Today the death of Jesus pervades the universe. The memorial of His passion collects all the passions, all the pain of the world and carries it on the cross. A crucifix, a thousand crucifixes.
Jesus dies in full awareness of the injustice of His death, but He chose not to resist it; He knows He chose ‘lowliness’ to reach the human heart and the only elevation He was granted was on the cross. He knows that the ridicule and the derision suffered will not stop and it will be difficult to believe Him. His death is not glorious, edifying. But His death is for everyone, in the name of all the crucified, He dies with them, for them, in their place. Jesus obedient, until death and death on the cross …
The Trinity takes shape on the cross. The incarnation has made visible the man Jesus, the Father and His voice are recognized, the Spirit finally spreads over humanity, enters them and keeps the divine presence alive in all people, thus realizing their new creation.

Lord, increase our love for Your Word. Make us trustful of it and grant that our rapport with the Word be daily, that we study it, love it, reflect on it, pray it.

THE VOICE OF Adrienne von Speyr, Mystic

Your Son, Father, after having died on the cross, has also accepted to be sent to hell, in the most abandoned and desolate land where no one has ever set foot. He did it to take part more fully in all Your mysteries, to show You that He is never tired of Your service and is never satisfied with His love for you. With this surplus of the descent into hell He went beyond the cross.
