FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
May 20, 2023 Sixth Saturday of Easter
WORD of the DAY
Jesus said to his
disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my
name he will give you. Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask
and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. “I have told you
this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to
you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. On that day you
will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For
the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to
believe that I came from God.
I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world
and going back to the Father.
(John 16: 23b-28)
How shall I live this Word?
“Ask and you will receive so that your joy to be full.” Jesus does not teach us to pray to God with the certainty that our every request will be granted; rather He invites us to trust in God, knowing that He never evades our questions, even when He does not answer according to our expectations. After all, He alone knows what is good and what is best for us. There are situations in which experiencing bitterness makes us more human, while success can fuel the spiral of pride. He knows better than us what is necessary. Full joy does not consist in getting what we want but in living in the light of God even those events that make us suffer. When we put aside the instinctive search for happiness to wholeheartedly embrace God’s will, which will always be to live fully, then we experience that joy that comes from God. Those who pray are never empty-handed. If we ask in faith, we will receive the light to understand that God’s paths don’t always match our desires. Prayer makes us evangelical-style people.
Lord, teach us to ask in Your name.
The voice of Gordon B. Hinckley, religious leader
Never forget to pray. God is alive. He is near. He is real. He is not only aware of us; He also takes care of us. He is our Father. He is available to all those who seek Him.
