Jesus knows me.

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

EASTER TUESDAY 4

WORD of the DAY

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.  No one can take them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand.  The Father and I are one.”    (John 10: 27-30)

How shall I live this Word?

When Jesus declares: “I know them,” it does not simply mean that He has written down our sensitive data (age – residence – telephone …) in His agenda. There is something more. In the Bible, the verb ‘to know’  means a personal, profound relationship of love; a relationship that goes beyond the intimacy of the nuptial relationship itself and the tenderness of a mother or father towards their child. Jesus assures me: ‘I know you.’ That is, I know everything about you,  everything about you interests Me. I take every detail of your life to heart. I love you. Indeed, for Jesus to love means to give life, that is to say: the very life of God, the communion of the Son with the Father, the same relationship of love that always linked Him to the Father, the Holy Spirit. And as a response, Jesus requires listening, which is the fundamental attitude of those who believe. It is essential to take care of the quality of listening, that is to say, vigilant and loving attention not only to words but first of all to the One who speaks to us.  By doing this, we will learn to recognize without fail, from among the thousand voices and the many messages that reach us, which ones are in tune with His voice and which are not. Precisely through intimacy with Jesus and by following Him as we listen, will we be able to enter into that exhilarating intimacy with the Father, light and security for the Teacher Himself in His earthly life. By listening to the voice of Jesus and following Him, we are introduced into this unity. If we live united with Jesus, we too can say: “I and the Father are one”.

Lord Jesus, Good Shepherd, who offered Your life so that everyone may have life, give us the abundance of Your life and make us capable of bearing witness to it and communicating it to others.

The Voice of  Little Ones

Whoever hears the voice of Jesus resounding in their heart and in particular this declaration, “I know them and I give them eternal life”, can enjoy an imperturbable peace and security. Years ago a girl, a few days before her death following an accident, wrote in her diary: “He has my name written on His hand.”
