FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
FEBRUARY 19, 2021
Friday after Ash Wednesday
WORD of the DAY
The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” (Matthew 9: 14 – 15)
How shall I live this Word?
The Pharisees are very good and honest people, attached to the Word, to what God said, to the Law established and codified in the past … so for them life is in observance. They don’t live in the present; life is the past. John’s disciples, on the other hand, are the other form of religiosity, entirely directed towards the future. The disciples of Jesus eat. For them God is not what He was, He is not what He will be, He is the one who is here, now, because He has already come. So the fundamental problem of the Christian life is to grasp the presence of God here and now, in my situation, whatever it is. The Christian life is present existence, lived in God’s presence, in the fullness of His gift, of His forgiveness received and given.
Lord, if today we fast to remind ourselves that we are preparing for a wedding feast, make our fasting authentic and in solidarity, without hypocrisy or exteriority!

I have to free myself from time and live in the present since there is no other time than this wonderful moment.
