FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

Third Friday of Lent
WORD of the DAY
Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone!” (Mark 12:29)
How shall I live this Word?
It could have resulted in yet another clash, a heated dispute: instead the scribe and Jesus meet, listening to the uniqueness of the Living God, who for Jesus is the Abbà. Love is a commandment. It is the commandment. Which means, it is not a feeling without a body, without acts. It is not an attachment based on immediate emotion, on a need. It is the commandment, the ‘necessary’ that holds the world together. It is a bond woven in faith, with one’s whole self; body, soul, spirit, strength, intelligence, sentiment. This is Spiritual maturity, the lintel of good works … ‘The first’… Nothing is more important.
Our God, you are the only Lord and in Jesus you revealed Yourself in Your mystery of love. Give us the grace to listen, for the heart, the senses, the mind to open to the one commandment that saves us. Through Christ, our Lord..
The Voice of Hetty Hillesum, a Believer
I feel in me the need to cross every frontier and to discover the common basis of all creatures so different and so opposed to each other. I would like to speak of this common basis in a soft and gentle voice, but tireless and persuasive. I would like to say a word that every human being can understand: love.
