Mary Help of Christians, Pray for us!

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

SIXTH TUESDAY OF EASTER

SOLEMNITY OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS

24 May 2022

WORD of the DAY

About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, there was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook; all the doors flew open, and the chains of all were pulled loose. When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors wide open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted out in a loud voice, “Do no harm to yourself; we are all here.” So they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house. He took them in at that hour of the night and bathed their wounds; then he and all his family were baptized at once. He brought them up into his house and provided a meal and with his household rejoiced at having come to faith in God. (Acts 26-28/32-34)

How shall I live this Word?

The jailer used the harshest precautions to make good guard, certainly mistreating them. After the earthquake they could have escaped, who wouldn’t have done it? But they lived fully what Jesus said in Luke 6: 27-28, “But to you who listen, I say: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly. ” By not running away and shouting loudly, “Don’t hurt yourself, we’re all here,” they did good to those who treated them badly. They could not foresee the consequences of their actions and the most important result was the conversion of the jailer with his whole family, as well as better treatment. Here we highlight the positive effects of following, without expectations, the teachings of Jesus and how these can only be seen afterwards. It is an invitation to trust and entrust ourselves to the Lord. A trust that can only grow by reading the Word and praying, even in the darkest moments of our life, when we are chained to the innermost part of our inner prison: Paul and Silas teach us this.

O Mary, most powerful Virgin, great and illustrious defender of the Church, wonderful help of Christians, formidable as an army in battle array, You who alone have overcome every heresy in the world; in our anguish, in our combats, in our difficulties, defend us from the enemy and in the hour of our death, receive our souls into Paradise! Amen. (Prayer to Mary Help of Christians of St. John Bosco)

The Voice of Pope Francis – Angelus 9 August 2020

“…To abandon ourselves with trust to God in every moment of our life, especially in the moment of trial and disturbance. When we feel strong doubt and fear, we seem to sink; in the difficult moments of life, where everything becomes dark, we must not be ashamed to cry out like Peter, “Lord, save me!” Knocking on the heart of God, on the heart of Jesus, «Lord, save me!  is a beautiful prayer. We can repeat it many times, “Lord, save me!”
