FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MOTHER OF THE CHURCH
June 1, 2020
WORD of the DAY
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. (John 19, 25-27)
How shall I live this Word?
At the crucial hour of His passion, the Lord Jesus gives us the gift of a presence and awareness; the presence is that of Mary, His Mother who becomes our Mother, Mother of the Church. Along with this great gift of presence, there is the awareness that in the hour of suffering, of pain, we are not alone.
In this regard, we recall a brief highlight made by Sr. Maria Pia commenting on this Gospel: “That being gathered together, there next to Jesus, when everyone else is gone, certainly united them in those spiritual depths that we reach, purified by so much love and just as much pain. ”
We can once again perceive the intercession of Mary, Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mother of the Church, precisely in this special historical time we are living. To her, to her intercession we entrust every member of the Church and every person living in our world.
Let us unite ourselves to the Collect prayer of today’s Liturgy:
O Father of mercies, whose Only Begotten Son, as He hung upon the Cross, chose the Blessed Virgin Mary, His Mother, to be our Mother also, grant we pray, that with her loving help your Church may be more fruitful day by day and, exulting in the holiness of her children, may draw to her embrace all the families of peoples.

The “feast” of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of the Church enters the Roman Calendar. And, as established by Pope Francis, the liturgical memory will be celebrated every year in a compulsory way on the Monday after Pentecost.
