FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD
Ninth Thursday of Ordinary Time
June 4, 2020
WORD of the DAY
The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘He is One and there is no other than he.’ And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” (Mark 12: 32-33)
How shall I live this Word?
Shema Israel! Listening is the first commandment. The devoted scribe knows this. Listening is the basic attitude of all the tradition of Israel. In front of the Word it is necessary to open ears and heart. However, the Master is not satisfied with answering with a few words, although full of meaning. He senses that other questions are hidden behind the scribe’s question. “On what to base existence? What is decisive and essential in life? What command to obey to live, and to live fully? What to do to be happy?”
Wisdom is in the quality of the answer to the question. The Master reveals the mysterious and sacred dynamics of the creature’s relationship with God. The first commandment is that of love. But a unique love that takes your entire life: emotions, strength, all of yourself. A unique love, like that of Jesus, who died, who gave everything for us. And, no less important, the commandment that “is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Love of neighbor, total gift also to the enemy, because the divine origin, consanguinity with the Absolute, remains sculpted in every man and woman. Listening is therefore loving. Listening to the Truth and obeying the Truth (in Hebrew the two verbs coincide.) Nothing sentimental. A total, reasonable, and wise love. The crucified love of the One who, unique, gave us everything..
My prayer to today is, “My God, I love you for all those who do not love You, I pray to You for all those who do not pray to You.
The voice of L. Monari, Author and Theologian
God loves you, gives you His love: this is the truth that is written in your heart with the Word and the Spirit. Then the love with which you love arises from the truth, which you have internalized. It is Jesus Christ within you, which originates from your love in truth.
