In order to be recognized as an Official Group of St. John Bosco’s Salesian Family, a Religious Congregation, an Association of the Lay Faithful, an Institute of Secular Life must request and receive the acceptance of the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, acting in his capacity as Don Bosco’s successor as Head of the Family. To qualify, the Group and its Members must meet the following criteria: 1. be bound by a life-long Promise or Vow, 2. have a spirituality that is based on the Christian Humanism of St. Francis de Sales, and 3. carry forward a mission which is in keeping with that of St. John Bosco’s charism. The first four Groups were founded directly by Don Bosco himself and serve as the point of reference for all the other Groups, as pertains to fidelity to Salesian charism, spirituality, and apostolate.
