FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD

Monday – Week Two

WORD of the DAY

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast.  People came to him and objected, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.  No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.  (Mark 2: 18-22)

How shall I live this Word?

“New wine in new wineskins.”  What good we do should be hosted within a change of the whole person. Jesus’ invitation is that of a total change of being itself which makes us totally new, especially in our way of thinking. New things cannot be done by keeping old mentalities. “Nobody sews a piece of rough cloth onto an old suit; otherwise the new patch takes something away from the old fabric and the tear becomes worse. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins, otherwise the wine will split the skins, and wine and skins are lost. How many times do we live in a pharisaic way just to feel good and just! How many times do we find ourselves judging the other by putting our nose into their experiences using the criterion of appearance or that of the rule for the rule.  Christianity is not simply a change of actions, of morals, but a real revolution that calls for internal conversion and above all asks us to start from ourselves, from our interiority. The style of the Gospel is a different style, as it is dictated only by Love. The fullness of the law is the Law of Love, a Love that becomes close, present. Jesus himself taught us: the Bridegroom is with us!

Today, in my return to my heart, I will ask the Lord Jesus to know how to live the Law of Love in the small daily choices.

The Voice of Wise People

Everyone thinks about changing the world but nobody thinks about changing themselves.” (Lev Tolstoy)

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” (Mahatma Gandhi)

“Begin by doing what is necessary, then what is possible. And suddenly you will find yourself doing the impossible.” (St. Francis of Assisi)
