This event is an initiative of the laity and consecrated Religious of St. John Bosco’s Salesian Family, conceived as a response to Pope Francis’ call in his apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, to celebrate the family while coming to the concrete aid of families, especially those struggling. Therefore, a primary aim of this gathering is to help family members of all ages grow spiritually, relationally, and intellectually, with special emphasis on helping parents in their role as the primary educators and evangelizers of their children. To this end, we are inviting speakers who will encourage and engage everyone in living in harmony with the Lord’s gift of the family, as modeled in the home of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Tied with this, we soon realized that the Preventive System of St. John Bosco is a gift that the Salesian Family can give to parents and families to live in their homes. Many attitudes, beliefs, and characteristics of “reason, religion, and loving-kindness” are woven into the fabric of the schedule of talks and activities by design.

Certainly, the Preventive System stands on our living in union with God, expressed in personal prayer, community prayer, and, most strongly, the living of a Sacramental Life; therefore, there will be perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Mass, the availability for Confession, and recitation of the Holy Rosary offered. Without a doubt, this is a perfect fit for a year in which we are called by Holy Mother Church to return to a strong devotion to Jesus’ True Presence in the Consecrated Host, at Mass, and in Adoration. The role of the emcee is to make explicit to all present how this is so and is a planned unfolding of this, our charismatic gift.

A second, but no less important aim is to educate parents and families to know where to turn when in need of help. To fulfill this purpose, we are inviting counselors and representatives of local Dioceses who can offer their presence, expertise, and guidance to the participants. In addition, we are inviting vendors to offer for sale educational resources which can help the young and their families continue the work begun at the gathering to grow in our Faith, in well-being, and in creating the domus ecclesiae in their homes.

The final aim is to encourage the Salesian Family and all present to become involved in outreach to other families; therefore, we are extending the invitation to groups which advocate for families as well as those already involved in family ministry. We are requesting that they send representatives to our event to share with the participants about their ministry.

In centering this gathering around living Amoris Laetitia by virtue of the Preventive System, it became immediately obvious that a synodal method or planning and organizing the gathering, as well as Pope Francis’ teachings of Laudato Si’, the Global Compact on Education, Evangelii Gaudium, Fratelli Tutti, and Christus Vivit will all have their part to play during the extended weekend.
