WORD of the DAY
Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? (John 21: 15 )
How shall I live this Word?
Jesus puts Peter to the test a little. He proved faithful and unfaithful, foolish and intelligent at the same time. Yet the choice of Jesus does not change. He wants him as the leader and shepherd of the flock. He wants him a fisher of people and head of the nascent Christian community, of the Church. He does not want him perfect and infallible, but he wants him to be aware of his own fragility and strength. He wants him ‘forgiven’ and aware of being such. He wants him humble, abandoned, and therefore faithful. If we had to look at the story of Peter with disenchanted eyes, he has nothing heroic, noble or desirable. And yet he is one of the privileged witnesses that God Himself places before us, as a model of the newness that His Word has brought. In love accepted and corresponded to, fragility is transformed into strength, infidelity into fidelity, fear and cowardice into courage and parresìa.
Lord, Peter illumines our contradictions and helps us to see them as ground possible for encountering You, to do wonders with You, beyond the measure of what we are, what we would want to decide.
The Voice of the Sequence of the Holy Spirit
Cleanse that which is unclean,
water that which is dry,
heal that which is wounded.
Bend that which is inflexible,
warm that which is chilled,
correct what goes astray.
