Seventh Wednesday of Easter

Seventh Wednesday of Easter Time

June 5, 2019

WORD of the DAY

Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the holy Spirit has appointed you overseers,

in which you tend the church of God that he acquired with his own blood.  (Acts 20: 28 )

How shall I live this Word?

We are still accompanied by Paul’s word to Miletus, to the elders of Ephesus. He is closing his discourse and gives them the word ‘watch’. So much courage, so much movement, so much ability to unhinge the usual, the blasphemous, and the superficial is not born in him from foolishness. It is the work of the Spirit that asks to be guarded. Watching becomes the basic action with which to protect the erupting novelty of the Gospel, not to force it or reduce it, but that it may not be extinguished or contaminated. So many times watching, supervising involve actions of containment, control (think of the assistants, of those who supervise the children at school recess, for example, who have as their sole concern that they do not do damage). Here watching is positive action, made more of care and protection, of motivation and encouragement to remain firm in Love. A vigilance over oneself, keeping alive the enthusiasm that the Gospel has brought.   This is watching over the flock, the community so that it remains animated, vibrant, and convinced of its choice for Christ!

Lord, we pray for our pastors and leaders.  May they increasingly represent You as a Church in outreach, not a Church in retirement.

The Voice of the Sequence of the Holy Spirit

Light immortal, Light divine,
Visit thou these hearts of thine,
And our inmost being fill.
