WORD of the DAY

The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” Then he left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other shore. (Mark 8: 11-13)

How shall I live this Word?

Many times it is easier to attribute a symbolic meaning to reality than to accept it as such. It is easier to speak through signs than to get down to the concrete. It is not easy to accept Jesus in His humanity, in His carnality, to take Him for what He is! Jesus in turn cannot accept as interlocutors those who want to mask, through their reasoning, their rejection of Him as a person. We too are like the Pharisees when we ask the Lord to give us an immediate response to our frustrations, our problems, our situations. The history of salvation is much more difficult to glimpse where we are, in that concrete historical incarnation: yet God invites me to read the presence of His plan of salvation precisely in the here and now of my life. How, where, and with whom I am now. Without running away. Jesus who shuns the Pharisees by evading their sophistic traps is the man who returns to look at reality, and to live it without being afraid of it.

Today I will endeavor to live with greater awareness and more actively my participation in community life. I will willingly accept whatever invitations bring me closer to my sisters and brothers and thus I will become nearer to them.
