St. John Apostle

WORD of the DAY

They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. (John 20: 4-8)

How shall I live this Word?

“… and he saw and believed”. Entering the sepulcher, finding the burial cloths, lights the heart’s memory of the beloved disciple. He remember the words of Jesus and believes in the Lord of life without seeing him at that moment! This disciple ‘sees with the heart’: love alone is the beginning of faith. Love ‘sees’ the signs and ‘believes.’ The beloved disciple lived his relationship with Jesus so intensely that he learns to recognize Him even in the signs of His presence/absence. He had allowed Jesus to incarnate Himself so deeply in his life that his heart had learned to discern in love the traces of His presence.

Help us, Lord, to make our own the love and faith of the ‘beloved disciple’ to have the humility to suspend judgment when faced with things we do not understand. Keep us trustful in the certainty that You are the Lord, You are greater than our heart and our mind.

The Voice of Pope Francis, Discourse to young Italians, August 11, 2018

And now my joy is to feel your hearts beating with love for Jesus, like those of Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John. And because you are young, I like Peter, am happy to see you run faster like John, driven by the impulse of your heart, sensitive to the voice of the Spirit that animates your dreams. This is why I say to you: do not be content with the prudent step of those who are queued at the end of the line. It takes courage to risk a leap forward, an audacious and daring leap to dream and realize like Jesus the Kingdom of God and commit yourselves to a more fraternal humanity. We need brotherhood: risk, go ahead! I will be happy to see you running harder than those in the Church who are a little slow and fearful, attracted by that much-loved Face, which we adore in the Holy Eucharist and we recognize in the flesh of the suffering. The Holy Spirit will impel you in this race forward. The Church needs your momentum, your intuitions, your faith. We need you.
