First Sunday of ADVENT

  FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Sunday December 2, 2018 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT  WORD of the DAY   The days are coming—oracle of the Lord—when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.    (Jeremiah 33: 14)   How shall I live this Word? The liturgy could sometimes seem like fiction, in the good sense of the word. We all know what Christmas is but we invent a time to wait for it, Advent, and we prepare ourselves for what we know has already arrived and whose effects we know. The truth is that the liturgy in making memory of the ‘already’, does not simply remember, but anticipates, foresees the ‘not yet’ contained in that same event. The events of the liturgy are in fact never exhausted: by celebrating them, they become alive, current, and are renewed. The words of consolation of the prophet Jeremiah open this advent and revitalize our hope. Many promises the good God has already realized them and they make our faith consistent, they animate our charity.
