The Beloved Son

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD JANUARY 10, 2021 Sunday BAPTISM OF THE LORD WORD of the DAY  It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”  (Mark 1: 9-10) How shall I live this Word?   Jesus comes, ‘happens’, in human history. He comes like the others and for the same reason – to be baptized – but His coming is an event that tears apart human history. He does not come from the same place as the other baptizers, who were from Judea and Jerusalem. He comes from the margins, from unreliable and unknown places. He arrives and is immediately immersed – the first act He performed according to Mark is ‘passion’ – in the waters of sin, loaded with a yoke that He still – after thirty years of hidden life in His village – ignores.
