Understanding Jesus

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD March 3, 2021  Second Wednesday of Lent WORD of the DAY  As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the Twelve disciples aside by themselves, and said to them on the way, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.” (Matthew  20: 17- 19) How shall I live this Word?   Jesus and his disciples are going up to Jerusalem. It is an uphill road not only physically, but also spiritually. The hour of the Passion is approaching. The  discourse the Teacher has to give to His chosen ones is very difficult.  That is why he ‘takes them aside’ and speaks to them of the torture and death He will have to face in Jerusalem. But His very close and intimate followers do not understand what is happening. Suffering does not agree with their idea of the Messiah. At this point, the request from the mother of...

SECOND SATURDAY OF EASTER TIME

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD SECOND SATURDAY of EASTER TIME April 25, 2020 WORD of the DAY He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16: 15) How shall I live this Word? Easter saw the resurrection of the Master, who appears to His own gathered in the Upper Room. And it is precisely them, still full of fear, whom Jesus sends for a truly universal, borderless mission: “Go into the whole world, proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” The Risen One is not afraid to entrust the proclamation of salvation to the hands of simple, unreliable, even traitorous men. Wherever the disciples of Jesus go, in all lands and in all cultures, they must proclaim the Good News that is the Gospel of Jesus. There are no more barriers of chosen people of Israel, there are no longer the borders of the Holy Land : in front of those poor hesitant disciples there is all creation! The Gospel cannot be contained neither in a people, nor in a culture, nor even in a...

Jesus is approaching the time of His Passion and Death.  He is walking with His apostles near Jericho from where He will begin going up to Jerusalem, a one day’s journey to reach the Holy City.  He feels the need to share with His most intimate followers, the tragic event that awaits Him. For the third time, He gathers His disciples around Him and repeats the mystery of His proximate death.  Every detail is described and suffered.  In spite of this, the disciples will have none of it.  But the Teacher insists, “the Son of Man will...
