27th Tuesday in Ordinary Time

  FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Tuesday October 9, 2018 Twenty-seventh Week of Ordinary Time  WORD of the DAY   Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.”  The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.  There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her”.   (Luke 10: 38-42)   How shall I live this Word? In Bethany Jesus finds the warmth of hospitality. Nomad as He is, without even a stone for a pillow at night, He tastes friendship and intimacy in that welcoming home. There is Martha, “burdened with much serving…anxious and worried about many things”.  She is absorbed in serving; her action becomes absolute, the frenzy of things fills her whole person, leaving no more space for anyone. Then there is Mary whose ideal representation is not so much in her physical position (“sitting at the feet of Jesus“) but in the symbolic meaning of that gesture which in biblical language indicates...
