Eighth Tuesday in Ordinary Time

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Tuesday, March 5, 2019 WORD of the DAY Give to the Most High as he has given to you, and as generously as you can afford. For the Lord is the one who repays, and he will repay you seven-fold. (Sirach 35: 12-13) How shall I live this Word? The mysterious exchange that we celebrate in every Eucharist is recounted by this page of Sirach. In a play of reciprocal gift, we find quality riches and the opportunity that asks for our generous gratuity. The more we give, the more we have, and the more we give. The giver of every gift is God, and seeing this, He will give us still more. He will repay seven-fold, which means infinitely. This is a dynamic that converts our gaze. With our eyes we see and often envy when we recognize how much better others are and how much more they have. Here, instead, the movement of gift makes the eye content, happy, and grateful for what we are and have, which makes us want to give still more.
