ST. JOHN LATERAN BASILICA

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD 31st Saturday of Ordinary Time November 9, 2019 Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica WORD of the DAY “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” (John 2: 16-17) How shall I live this Word? Today we celebrate the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the Pope’s Cathedral, considered to be the mother of all the Churches of Rome and of the world. In 320 D.C. it was donated by Emperor Constantine who had converted to Christianity, to Pope Milziade and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester on November 9, 324. For more than ten centuries it was the See of the Papacy before it was transferred to St. Peter’s. For Christians, this feast is also the occasion to manifest our faith and our attachment to the Pope, the successor of St. Peter. The Gospel reminds us that the temple must be the house of God, the house of prayer, and not a place of business or money. It is not the stones that make the house of God, but the faithful.   FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Friday November 23, 2018 Thirty Third Week of Ordinary Time  WORD of the DAY   Then Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things,  saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves”. (Luke  19: 45-46)   How shall I live this Word? That Jesus, who in the great proclamation of the Beatitudes had asserted “Blessed are the meek” seems exactly the opposite of meekness in these lines of the Gospel. And this is fine! As in the great masterpieces of the Renaissance Painters, it is not all light nor all darkness, but the alternation of them that expresses the strength and beauty of the work of art. Jesus drives away from the sacred place those unfortunates who had much more thirst for money than respect and veneration for a place where sacred rites were held.
