First Wednesday of Lent

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD First Wednesday of LENT March 4, 2020 WORD of the DAY While still more people gathered in the crowd, he said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.” (Luke 11: 29-30) How shall I live this Word? We are tempted by the spectacular, by the miracle that upsets the laws of physics and reason, by the amazement at what goes against our knowledge. We want striking miracles, of those who turn stones into bread, those who change water into wine, those who resurrect the dead. And certainly Jesus can do it! But we want these signs and we are not able to see and even less to appreciate the miracles of every day, the simple and spontaneous ones, those that occur in silence and humility: the sunrise every morning, the awakening of nature, the life that flourishes and surrounds us, human beings, awe at God.
