Fifth Friday of Ordinary Time

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Fifth Friday of Ordinary Time February 14, 2020 WORD of the DAY After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. (Luke 10: 1) How shall I live this Word? Today’s feast reminds us of the mission of two brothers, Cyril and Methodius, evangelizers of the Slavic peoples. The “couples of brothers” – the first two that Jesus calls: Simon and Andrew, James and John – immediately come to mind – we find them in the Gospel as a strategic choice by Jesus, so much so that, in this new mission, He does not call them, but sends them two by two. Jesus, who had already sent the Twelve (apostles: missionaries – sent), now sends seventy-two more, as many as the number of people living on the earth, according to the table of nations of Genesis 10 (in the Greek version of the LXX).
