FOURTH MONDAY OF EASTER TIME

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD FOURTH MONDAY of EASTER TIME May 4, 2020 WORD of the DAY I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10: 11) How shall I live this Word? The living Christ reveals Himself as “I am” and specifies, “I am the bread of life” (Jn 6: 35); “I am the light of the world” (Jn 8: 12); “I am the sheep gate” (Jn 10: 7); “I am the resurrection and the life” (Jn 11: 25); “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (Jn 14: 6); “I am the vine” (Jn 15: 5). In our passage today, Jesus, after presenting Himself as the sheep gate, declares two times, “I am the good (beautiful- Kalòs) shepherd”, re-assuming in Himself the image of all the shepherds given by God to His people (Moses, David, the Prophets), but even the image of God Himself. “I am the Shepherd”. This word in Hebraic is derived from the root ‘raah’, that means to nourish, feed, give food. The Shepherd is the one who feeds. Christ does not sate but rather nourishes.
