Third Monday in Ordinary Time

  FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Monday, January 22, 2018 Week Three of Ordinary Time   WORD of the DAY   Then all the elders of Israel came to the king in Hebron, and at Hebron King David made a covenant with them in the presence of the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel. (2 Samuel 5: 3) How shall I live this Word? We will dedicate much of the week to meditation on the figure of David, the great, merciful, and sinner king. A figure who in its contradictory nature allows us to contemplate both the greatness of man in the image of God, and the pettiness of a humanity that forgets to be an image of God, but who in his error learns, repenting, to recognize himself more and more as such. The very young son of Jesse, red-haired, identified by Samuel and by him anointed King, is now recognized by all the elders of Israel. David enters into a covenant with them and thus renews the presence of God in the midst of His people, with the same strength that Abraham and Moses had in establishing the covenant.
