FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Ninth Thursday of Ordinary Time June 4, 2020 WORD of the DAY The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, ‘He is One and there is no other than he.’ And ‘to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself’ is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” (Mark 12: 32-33) How shall I live this Word? Shema Israel! Listening is the first commandment. The devoted scribe knows this. Listening is the basic attitude of all the tradition of Israel. In front of the Word it is necessary to open ears and heart. However, the Master is not satisfied with answering with a few words, although full of meaning. He senses that other questions are hidden behind the scribe’s question. “On what to base existence? What is decisive and essential in life? What command to obey to live, and to live fully?
