27th Saturday in Ordinary Time

  FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Saturday October 13, 2018 Twenty-seventh Week of Ordinary Time  WORD of the DAY   While he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.”  He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” (Luke 11: 27-28)   How shall I live this Word? After Jesus has effectively silenced his adversaries and their ridiculous accusations, a woman cries out from the surrounding crowd: “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed!” It was beautiful praise, first to Jesus Himself but also to His mother. This woman is clearly one in the crowd who was amazed by the work that Jesus is doing in contrast to the cynical unbelievers who want to destroy Jesus. But Jesus changes the words of the woman. “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it!” Greatness in the eyes of God does not lie in the gifts and privileges that have been granted, but in the answer given to God.
