COME, LORD JESUS

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD FOURTH SUNDAY of ADVENT December 20, 2020 WORD of the DAY  In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.  And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.”  But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.  He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”    (Luke 1: 26-34) How shall I live this Word?   The Annunciation always remains a Mystery, in fact it is mysterious how the Infinite can enter the finite. It is mysterious how the...

ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Third Monday of Lent, March 25, 2019 ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD  WORD of the DAY  In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.  And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.  Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.  (Luke 1: 26-27/38)   How shall I live this Word? “The Lord is with you ”. God, the ALL-Present, meets Mary, greets her, reveals her profound identity: “Full of God – the Beloved” and awaits an answer, God waits for Mary to choose to turn her heart or to the views of God , or towards her views. Waits for her to choose herself as the criterion of discernment or trust the words of God.  And Mary chooses: “let it be done to me according to your word”! Every moment is a moment of choice, of response; every moment...

ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD TO MARY

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Second Monday of Easter, April 9, 2018 SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD WORD of the DAY    “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be… But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”  The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you… Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her.   (Luke 1: 28-29, 34-35, 38)   How shall I live this Word? Since this solemnity could not be celebrated on Palm Sunday, we celebrate it today because such a great event that changed the whole of human history cannot be omitted.  Mary was troubled at the angel’s words, as any of us would have been faced with the mystery of the incarnation of God in her womb.  She asked what meaning the greeting had.  She sought to understand as she exercised her faith, which is a responsible...

CHRISTMAS EVE

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD December 24, 2017 Fourth Sunday of Advent CHRISTMAS EVE WORD of the DAY  And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.       (Luke 1: 28/38) How shall I live this Word? Today is both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve.   The Liturgy gives us Mary’s Annunciation for our meditation, She who is the most sublime Model, the Mother of our Savior who is about to be born. In his greeting, the Angel says to Mary: “Hail, favored one, the Lord is with you!”  This greeting expresses Mary’s vocation; it is her secret name known only to God, ‘full of grace’.  Within Mary’s spiritual journey is enclosed ‘joy’, every promise of God’s goodness toward her, which radically transforms the humble woman of Nazareth, making her worthy of God’s glance.  In Mary, in her body, joy and grace take a face, that of Emanuel, the Lord that comes to dwell among His people. Mary experiences various reactions at the...
