PENTECOST SUNDAY

  FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD PENTECOST SUNDAY May 31, 2020  WORD of the DAY  [Jesus] said to them again,  “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”  And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,  “Receive the holy Spirit.  Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” (John 20, 21-23)  How shall I live this Word? We are in the upper room. Jesus communicates His mandate to a handful of men still stunned by the events of the Master’s Passion, death, and Resurrection. In the ‘upstairs’ room He speaks demanding words: He said to them again: “Peace be with you! As the Father sent me, I also send you.” He renews the gift of peace, as if to say that with His resurrection He started a new time, marked by joy, but also characterized by a new task entrusted to the disciples. It is the first time in John’s gospel that Jesus explicitly sends His most faithful ones. A mandate that concerns all the disciples, those present in Jerusalem and future ones, of all eras and geographical areas. The...
