First Friday of Lent

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD First Friday of Lent, March 15, 2019 WORD of the DAY I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven”. (Matthew 5: 20-26) How shall I live this Word? Habituated to evaluate everything according to the yardstick of retributive justice, we generally think that even God will weigh us with the unquestionable judgment that looks to the merits. Today Jesus clearly tells us that things are not so, because our justice cannot be anything other than the justification that the Lord actuates in us, making His saving forgiveness prevail, which alone is able to make one ‘just’. Whoever does not recognize this uncompromising love with which God Himself graciously covers all our sins will be himself ruthless towards his own kin; he will drive them out of stupidity, madness, and will easily liquidate them by means of only a few crooked words.
