ASH WEDNESDAY

FRIENDS and SERVANTS of the WORD Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019 WORD of the DAY Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning. (Joel 2: 12) How shall I live this Word? This cry to RETURN seems suffered. It is the voice of God who through the prophet, pleads with humanity to be converted, to stop turning its back on their Creator and give themselves to Him again. In Christ, after His coming, death, and resurrection, this invocation is even more tenacious. Our imagination is by now clothed in the merciful father of the parable of St. Luke, who scrutinizes the horizon of his home, waiting for the return of his prodigal son. The strong time of Lent broadens this supplication and has special signs that create a unique occasion for reflection, for becoming aware. It is an annual appointment that renews and re-proposes to us with power and newness, as though it were the first and only time. At every age, this time shakes us and makes re-emerge the desire for repentance, liberation, salvation.
